Pleasure Craft Operation
Mandatory for all pleasure craft operators
A number of years ago, Tecnic Driving School entered into a partnership with the Lifesaving Society and the Institut maritime du Québec (Quebec Maritime Institute). Courses provided at Tecnic are accredited by the Canadian Coast Guard and give you the knowledge you need to earn the “Pleasure Craft Operator Card”.Since 1999, government requires of all pleasure craft operators to have a proof of competency in pleasure craft operation, namely the Pleasure Craft Operator Card, in accordance with the following rules.
Rules
As of September 15, 1999
All operators born after April 1, 1983, proof of competency required on board.
As of September 15, 2002
All operators of craft under 4 m in length, including personal watercraft, proof of competency required on board.
As of September 15, 2009
All operators, proof of competency required on board.

Boat Operator Accredited Training (BOAT)™ Course
- The Boat Operator Accredited Training™ (B.O.A.T.) course leads to earning the Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
- Duration of class: 4 hours.
- The test is written at the end of the class.
- Candidates must achieve 75% on the official written test to earn their PCO card at the end of the program.
- The BOAT program has been developed by the Lifesaving Society and the Institut maritime du Québec.
- Content focuses on: Knowledge about operating a pleasure craft, navigation regulations, buoys, beacons and signs, and how to respond in a boating emergency.
Test
If you are a boater with previous experience and knowledge, register to our special “exam-only” option to write an official test without following the course. You must achieve 75% on the official written test to earn your PCO card.
